What is a Chesterfield Sofa?

A Chesterfield sofa is denoted quite simply by its timeless elegance and eloquent arms, deep buttoning, and hand pressed studded detailing.

The gravitas that a Chesterfield sofa brings to any room is unquestionable and stands testament to its enduring appeal. It is after all, an iconic and renowned piece of furniture.

Not just a piece of furniture but a piece of history.

The Chesterfield sofa has a rich and vivid history which has lead to it's iconic status.

Originally commissioned for Chesterfield House, one of the most splendid and magnificent mid-eighteenth-century houses in Mayfair, London.  Built by one of the most fascinating men of the 18th century, Philip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, a politician and diplomat, statesman and letter-writer.  His grand house stood in Mayfair extending from Audley Square to the north side of Curzon Street, what is now Chesterfield Street.
